The south-west monsoon of 2003 was marked by
near-normal rainfall over the country, distributed equitably over both space
and time
For the country as a whole, the total rainfall from 1
June to 30 September 2003 was 102 % of its Long Period Average
Following
the drought of 2002, this year's monsoon rains brought welcome relief to
most parts of the country that had experienced severe drought conditions
last year
The June-September rainfall was normal/excess in 33 out
of the 36 meteorological sub-divisions and 75 % of the meteorological
districts received excess/normal rainfall
The main
rainfall-deficient area runs from south Maharashtra across Karnataka on to
Kerala
Out of the 267 meteorological districts which suffered from
drought last year, as many as 205 districts received good rainfall in this
monsoon, but drought has continued in 62 districts
