Location:
Located 181 kms from Guwahati and 35 kms from Tezpur in Sonitpur district of
Assam.
Description:
Nestled
at the foothills of Eastern Himalayas, Nameri National Park covers an area
of 200 Sq. Kms. With river Jia Bhoroli bifurcating the park It is the most
scenic of all the national parks of Assam. Jia Bhoroli river of Assam is
famous for the Mahseer angling, since the time of British. This perennial
river enters Assam in the plains, near Bhalukpung after swirling through the
rugged mountains of Arunachal. Its is home of the Golden Mahseer- The Tiger
of Indian rivers and a catch for any angler
Apart from sizeable
population of endangered species like White Winged Duck, Nameri National
Park can boast of the Khasi hill terrapin or the Assam reefed turtle once
believed to be extinct was found in Nameri in 1992. Besides these, elephants
(population nearly 200 in 1993 census), deer, tiger, black bear, birds
(identified 233 so far) and many species of orchids can be seen.
There
are no roads inside the park. The park is also home to the Mithun or Indian
bison.
Activities at the Park includes wild life viewing on elephant
back and by boat, angling in Bhorelli river with prior Govt. permission

Park
Safari Timings:Visitors can enter the area only in the
mornings or in the afternoon. Elephant safari is the best way to move inside
the park. One can also explore the park on a boat.
Accommodation
and facilities: There are accommodations in Tezpur and
Bhalukpong 21 kms from the park. One can also stay at the Eco-camp at
Potasali.
Wildlife:Mammals:
Assamese Macaque, Capped Langur, Wild dog, Golden Backed Jackal,
Bengal Fox, Civet Cat, Hog Deer, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Tiger, Leopard,
Jungle Cat, Leopard Cat, Fishing Cat Indian Grey Mongoose, Wild Boar, Indian
Porcupine, Indian Pangolin, Fulvous Fruit Eating Bat, Flying Squirrel
Flora: The floral wealth of the park is very significant.
The Natural Forest species are like Bombax ceiba, Dalbergia sisoo, Sterculia
villosa, Trewia nudiflora, Zizypphus jujuba, Litsaea polyantha, etc. Among
the non aquatic grassland species the prominent are Phragmites karka, Arundo
donax, Imperata cylindrical, Saccarum spp. etc. The aquatic grass/plants
species are Andropogon spp., Ipomea reptans, Enhydra flushians, Nymphia
spp., Wichornia spp. etc
Birds:
Home to the White bellied heron and White Winged Duck the Nameri Tiger
Reserve is also a fabulous bird watching destination. Lesser racket tailed
Drongos, Beautiful Nuthatch, Grey headed Fishing Eagle, Jerdon's Baza and
many more extremely difficult species are to be expected.
Insects:
Nameri being an aqua habitat alongwith moist deciduous forest is
teeming with insect life. From butterflies and moths to the incredible
variety of spiders and ants and termites Nameri is a treat for any
entomologist.
